High rise condos offering majestic Lake Michigan views are among the assets to be found in Wilmette, a community 16 miles north of Chicago.

Wilmette offers the both of best worlds. It is close enough to Chicago to make it easy to get in and out of the city, but provides a suburban oasis where residents can enjoy greenery, a quaint downtown district and, if they live in one of those condo high rises, a soaring view of the lake.

In addition to being close to the Edens Expressway, Wilmette has the northernmost station the Chicago Transit Authority’s Purple Line "L." The town also has a Metra commuter rail station.

The village was formed in 1924 by the merger of two older villages, Wilmette and Gross Point. The villages had different characters and patterns of development which can still be seen today. The east side of Wilmette is wooded and next to the lake; the west side was a farming community settled by German immigrants. It’s great growth spurt occurred in post World War II when people moved to the area to raise the baby boom generation.

The village takes its name from Antoine Ouilmette, a French-Canadian fur trader who in 1829 was granted a 1,280 acre tract of land on which Wilmette now stands.

There are plenty of retailers in Wilmette. Larger department stores can be found at the Edens Plaza Shopping Center which was built in 1965. Smaller shops and boutiques that specialize in upscale clothing, jewelry, gifts and home accessories are in Wilmette’s historical commercial districts. The village’s friendly atmosphere is exemplified when shop owners and restauranteurs greet customers by name.

There are also plenty of ways to curb hunger pains in Wilmette. Whether your taste is for a hearty stack of pancakes, a quick burger, a slice of pizza or the cuisine of a French-style bistro, restaurants abound in Wilmette.

The community has several historic districts and landmark buildings. One that is most recognizable is the Baha’I House of Worship which is one of just seven such temples in the world.

It is a place for quiet prayer and meditation that is open to everyone. Since its completion in 1953, more than five million people have been drawn to visit the temple to see its magnificant architecture and lovely garden.

Condos can be pricey in this well-heeled community. A three bedroom, four and a half bath penthouse is $1.6 million. It features a mirrored foyer, fireplace, marble floors, and floor to ceiling windows that embrace views of Lake Michigan. Other units in older high-rises with two bedrooms and two baths and which also offer lake views cost in the $400,000 to $500,000 range. The low end of the market is about $250,000.

Whether it’s the short train ride to Chicago or the gorgeous lake views, condo dwellers find much to appreciate in Wilmette and homes that are sure to appreciate.
