West Town is an area northwest of Chicago's Loop that encompasses some smaller neighborhoods in which condos are sprouting.

Wicker Park is an enclave that is best known for its large number of condo-style lofts and as a hip place to live.

It was founded in the 1870s to be a place where people of varied economic backgrounds could afford to live and work. It has become a multi-faceted community where condo construction is flourishing and where people gravitate toward condo-style lofts, restaurants, night life and art.

It name was taken from brothers Charles and Joel Wicker who purchased an 80-acre tract of land on Milwaukee Avenue in 1870 with the idea of creating a neighborhood of economic diversity. Unlike other Chicago neighborhoods that followed a traditional grid system, the Wickers designed varied lot sizes to provide room for stately mansions with ample lawns and coachhouses as well as cozier lots to suit a cottage or mid-size home.

Wicker Park boomed following Chicago's Great Fire in 1871 when immigrants from Northern Europe made homes here. Another great resurgence occurred in the 1970s and 80s when artists were drawn here to establish galleries and studios.

The arts remain a large influence in Wicker Park where the annual Around the Coyote Arts Festival is held. For a weekend every fall, 60 local art studios open their doors to the public. There are also cultural performances, theatre and film screenings.

If viewing cutting-edge artwork makes you hungry then there is no end of places to eat in Wicker Park. From tapas to taco stands, the neighborhood is home to many restaurants, wine bars and other clubs and watering holes where young people gather to dance or chat the night away.

Other featured cuisines in Wicker Park and West Town as a whole are Middle Eastern, Italian, Thai and Chinese. The neighborhood is also known for trendy restaurants that offer sumptuous Sunday buffets.

For later in the day, one of the area's most compelling hot spots is the Double Door on Milwaukee Avenue which presents new artists and veterans. It's possible in Wicker Park to spend any evening of the week listening to jazz, rock or blues.

The neighborhood is highlighted by the four-acre, triangular-shaped Wicker Park which has a lovely fountain and is a peaceful oasis in this urban neighborhood.

But the park is only part of the story of elegance in Wicker Park. The housing stock is just as charming.

While Milwaukee Avenue and Division Street are bustling thoroughfares in the neighborhood, side streets are quieter. They are lined with landmark mansions and newly constructed condos and lofts. Architectural styles in Wicker Park include Italianate, Queen Anne, Romanesque and cottage-style.

Loft-style condos and mid-rise buildings in Wicker Park are furnished with the latest in materials and finishes including granite counters, maple or cherry cabinets, hardwood floors, stainless steel appliances and marble floors.

Whether your taste is for a condo in an exquisitely rehabbed vintage building or for a light, bright, contemporary condo in a new building, it's possible to find these homes in Wicker Park.

Other neighborhoods in West Town include Humboldt Park, Ukranian Village, East Village, Noble Saure and River West.

Along with Wicker Park, Ukranian Village and River West are good spots to look for condos. For instance, a condo building in Ukranian Village is 2800 Chicago where units start at $340,000. It features hardwood floors, granite and stainless steel appliances in the kitchen, stone baths, and private outdoor space.

Condos in West Town are easily reachable via expressways, public transportation and are close to Chicago's Loop. With assets ranging from an interesting stock of condos and other housing to a convenient location and an exciting night life, it is a community where condos provide a quality investment and interesting places to live
