How many neighborhoods have a Ferris Wheel on a pier jutting into Lake Michigan, a theatre renowned for cutting-edge portrayals of William Shakespeare’s works and a world-class contemporary art museum?

All of these and more intriguing attractions can be found in Streeterville, a north side neighborhood bounded by Lake Shore Drive on the east and north, Rush Street on the west, and the Chicago River on the south.

Streeterville is known as a neighborhood that draws condo dwellers and for then array of high-rise buildings in which they live.

It’s hard to imagine a neighborhood with prettier views. Imagine gazing through a condo’s ample windows at the picturesque Ferris Wheel turning on the city’s famed Navy Pier. That view might, however, be surpassed by splashy displays of fireworks that illuminate the sky over the lake and pier on Wednesday and Saturday nights.

With a host of restaurants, high-end stores and cultural attractions, Navy Pier is destination for tourists. It is where the renowned Chicago Shakespeare Theatre is located. Another cultural entity, The Musuem of Contemporary Art, which has exhibits and a terraced sculpture garden overlooking the lake is not far away.

The bustling neighborhood around the pier and museum is also a place that many people call home. Residents of condo buildings could easily choose to spend some of their leisure hours visiting the pier. When out-of-town guests drop by, is sure to warrant a visit.

But there are many other options within walking distance of their doors that condo residents also enjoy. The neighborhood has a wide range of restaurants: Middle Eastern; upscale Chinese; Thai; French; American and pizza joints where Chicago’s famed deep dish pizza is served.

As colorful as Streeterville is today, it has a past that is just as vivid and interesting. One of the city’s most eccentric characters, George Wellington "Cap" Streeter is credited with founding the area.

In 1886, a schooner he piloted was grounded on a sandbar in Lake Michigan, about 450 east of Michigan Avenue. Unable to move it, he turned his vessel into his home and lived there. Fifteen years after the Great Chicago Fire, the city was in a whirlwind of building. Cap charged contractors a fee to use his sandbar as a dump. The practice eventually created 186 acres of new land and Cap dubbed the area "The District of Lake Michigan."

A far cry from its beginnings, today the neighborhood is also known for condos and for prestigious educational institutions and medical facilities. These include the University of Chicago’s Graduate School of Business, Loyola University Chicago; Northwestern University’s Chicago Campus and the Feinberg School of Medicine. Northwestern Memorial, one of the largest private hospitals in Illinois, is located here as is The Rehabilitation Institute of Chicago, which is designed for patient care, research, and education in physical medicine and rehabilitation.

The neighborhod has a committed group of residents working to ensure quality of life. Founded in 1975, the Streeterville Organization of Active Residents (SOAR) is a non-profit, non-political volunteer organization.

The group favors an exciting project, construction of a 124-story spire designed by internationally known architect/engineer Santiago Calatrava. The tower at 400 N. Lake Shore Drive was announced a year ago and would surpass the 1,450-foot Sears Tower. It already has city planning and zoning approvals for a 150-room hotel and about 300 condos priced from about $600,000 to $5 million

A new 400-unit condo building is at 600 N. Lake Shore Drive is already underway. It includes a 40-story north building, which is under construction, and a 46-story south building with construction set to begin in early 2007. Initial occupancy for the 154-unit north building is slated for summer of 2007. Building amenities include a fitness center, business center, dry cleaning valet, rooftop sculpture garden and sundeck, community rooms with kitchens, and a doorman. A nearby walkway leads under Lake Shore Drive to the beach.

These projects prove Streeterville's continuing draw as a destination for condo dwellers who expect a vibrant neighborhood and homes that will continue to appreciate.
