From spacious loft-style condos to others housed in skyscrapers that provide sweeping views of the neighborhood, the South Loop is a cosmopolitan urban enclave that has come alive in recent decades with new and renovated housing.

Located just south of the Loop, it is an epicenter for condo construction. It’s easy to see why. The neighborhood is served by excellent public transit and is close to expressways. It’s also within walking distance of the city’s best natural amenity, Lake Michigan, and contains some of the landmark buildings and cultural amenities that make Chicago unlike any other city in the country.

Pocket neighborhoods within the South Loop add to its charms and distinctive character. Take, for instance, Printers Row. In the late 19th and early 20th century, this area on the south end of the neighborhood was a hub for printing and publishing businesses.

More than a century later, Printers Row has been turned into a residential district appreciated for loft-style condos in former warehouses and factories. These spacious condos have all the sort of amenities that people want in lofts: large windows, open spaces, hardwood floors, original wood trim and beams, exposed ductwork and interesting histories. It is also where a world-class book fair, the Printers Row Book Fair, is held annually.

Book stores, antiques shops and trendy boutiques are also part of the landscape in the South Loop.

They are not farm from alandmark structure in Printers Row with an intriguing past. It is Dearborn Station which opened in 1885. This building marked by an elegant clock tower now contains office and retail space. But it was once a departure point for trains traveling west. From the 1920s through the 1940s, it was not unusual to spot stars and starlets at the station as they were making their ways to California via the Santa Fe Railroad that operated from the station.

Motor Row is another niche neighborhood with an interesting past. In the early 20th Century, this area roughly from the 1400 to the 2500 block of South Mighigan Avenue and from 2200 to 3500 of South Indiana Avenue as well as portions of Wabash Avenue was where carmakers had elegant showrooms. Ford, Pierce-Arrow, Locomobile and many others sold cars here. Some of those showrooms, still sporting the carmakers' emblems, have been turned into condos.

High rise condo projects are also prevalent in the neighborhood. They include a 300-unit condo high-rise on Clark Street just north of Roosevelt Road, the 29-story Michigan Avenue Tower, a 221-unit condo building at 1230 S. Michigan Ave., and Michigan Avenue Tower II, a 28-story building at 1400 S. Michigan Ave. that is planned to have 268 units.

The site is across the street from the Chicago Firehouse restaurant, where President Bush recently celebrated his 60th birthday with Mayor Daley. Eateries of all sorts and cafes are staking claims in the South Loop including rustic Mexican, Latin, American and upscale, white tablecloth establishments.

The area’s cultural highlights are the city’s Museum Campus which features the Field Museum, Shedd Aquarium and the Adler Planetarium. Lake Michigan surrounds the campus which provides daily opportunities for visitors to expand their minds.

In addition to the many people visiting the museum campus, another 3 million people a year are drawn to the South Loop by McCormick Place. This premier convention facility includes three state-of-the-art buildings and a fourth building under construction. The new building will have 460,000 square feet of exhibition space and a 100,000 square foot ballroom.

The construction of the new building at McCormick Place is adding to the South Loop's revival. But people who reside in condos here already know it as a place where unique housing is readily available and where convenience is a key attraction.
