Contemporary high rise condos and a suburban setting go hand-in-hand in Skokie, a community north of Chicago which recently welcomed it largest condo project ever.

The community was first incorporated in 1888 under the name Niles Centre. It was renamed Skokie in the 1940s, a name that may have been derived from a Native American name for marsh or swamp.

The village’s first settlers were immigrants from Germany and Luxembourg. Its greatest real estate boom took place following World War II when housing rapidly took the place of empty lots and created a community that bustled with baby boomer families.

1945, 124 new homes, with a combined value of just over $1 million, were constructed within the village limits. Just nine years later, in 1954, a total of 1,554 homes were built valued at about $24.5 million.

One reason for the growth during the 1950s was the construction of Edens Expressway which opened in 1951. In addition to being just off the expressway, the village is served by the Skokie Swift which transports thousands of commuters daily to Chicago.

There are many reasons to for condo dwellers not to stray far from their homes in Skokie. One of those reasons is ample shopping. Old Orchard Shopping Center opened its doors to customers in 1956. The center’s 65 stores connected by stone concourses, and beautified by landscaping of trees and shrubs, flower gardens, fountains, pools and footbridges continue to draw shoppers. It has approximately 1.2 million square feet of retail space and a wide range of high-end stores.

The village has continued to evolve over the decades. Today it has about 63,000 residents of many ethnic and cultural backgrounds. Every year, the village celebrates its diversity when the Skokie Festivals of Cultures is held.

Whether you want shop or dine at a restaurant, there are ample numbers of places to enjoy those activities in Skokie.

It also has a vibrant park district that maintains more than 240 acres of scenic parkland and provides nearly any recreational activity that can be imagined from fitness classes and canoe trips to dance classes and dog obedience lessons.

Skokie is also a place where condo dwellers can take advantage of these activities and find interesting homes in which to live.

An example is Optima Old Orchard Woods which has three twenty-story towers and a striking contemporary design. rising along the Edens Expressway. The 700-unit towers are linked by cantilevered ledges, voids and sky gardens in this complex designed by the nationally acclaimed architect David Hovey. A three bedroom penthouse with Chicago skyline views at Optima Old Orchard would be in the $699,000 price range.

Another new condo development is The Metropolitan of Skokie. A three bedroom, two bath condo with granite counters, hardwood floors, and 42 inch cabinets, marble baths and a fireplace is about $500,000. Still another new condo structure is Madison Place Condominiums where features a range of condos from two bedroom units to deluxe penthouse homes with private roof decks. Square feet ranges from 1,327 to 2,010. A two bedroom, two bath unit is about $500,000. There also are less pricey condos in the $200,000 range in Skokie indicating that this diverse community has condos to meet most anyone's budget or desire for a home that will increase in value.
