North Center is a bustling, ecletic neighborhood filled with shops, restaurants and condos.
It was not such a thriving hub in the 1870s when it could only be reached by the Chicago River and Little Fort Road (now Lincoln Avenue.) Today, it is far from inaccessible. It is is just six miles from the Loop and convenient to expressways and public transporation.
The neighborhood is bounded by Montrose Avenue on the north; by Diversey Parkway on the south; by the Chicago River on the west and by Ravenswood Avenue on the east.
North Center was settled, mostly by Germans, in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. They were drawn to industries that operated along the Chicago River. Today, the river is just as compelling an attraction but now it is a draw for condo dwellers.
The nexus of this neigborhood is the intersection of Lincoln Avenue, Irivng Park Road and Damen Avenue, a busy commercial thoroughfare that has long attracted a vibrant mix of businesses from bowling alleys to diners to to theatre.
If a night on the town includes the theatre than North Center has what you seek. It is home to traditional theatre performed at the American Theatre Company, and the Lincoln Lodge where stand-up comedy gets the audiences laughing.
The mix of restaurants and shops is varied from European pastry shops to pizza places, Italian restaurants and Greek tavernas.
The neighborhood also boasts an Antique Row on Belmont Avenue, a street festooned with green canopies over shop doors and which evokes a trendy ambience.
Streets that veer away from this commercial hub are quiet and treelined. They are lined with vintage brick buildings and Victorian structures that reflect the area's architectural charms and which are being rehabbed as condos.
Condos in the North Center neighborhood range from $180,000 for a one bedroom unit in a structure renovated with the newest in materials, such as granite and stainless steel appliances. The upper end of the condo market is in the high $600,000 range for a spacious, luxury three bedroom, three bath unit.
A new condo development is Cityscape Condominiums at 3901-3939 North Western Avenue. It offers 86 condo units with 20 different floor plans. One, two, and three bedroom units have stainless steel appliances, granite countertops, and hardwood floors. Some units offer private terraces or balconies.
Cityscape is in a part of North Center known as St. Ben's. This smaller enclave takes it's name from St. Benedict's Parish, a Catholic Church and school.
Another desireable enclave is Roscoe Village which is prized because it has the Chicago River running through it.
When it comes to condos, North Center offers an affordable alternative to more expensive neighborhoods as well as a place where luxury homes with river views can be found. |
