Spacious boulevards, charming single family houses and a wealth of condos are assets of the landspace in Logan Square, a community with a rich history and a vibrant present on Chicago's north side.
The past, represented in stately mansions, is mixed with new construction in this neighborhood that puts an emphasis on historic preservation while also welcoming the influx of modern aesthetics.
One of the smaller niches within Logan Square where condos are abundant is called Bucktown. Condos dwellers are sure to find a home to suit their needs in Bucktown. They range from units that have been renovated from top to bottom in vintage structures to others that have been converted from industrial spaces and new condos in buildings that are designed with cutting edge architecture and a flair for dramatic spaces.
Young people patronize the many bars and restaurants in Buck Town.
The neighborhood, which in its early days was a farming community, takes its name from the buck goats that were once were tended here.
The larger neighborhood, Logan Square, was named in honor of Civil War General John A. Logan. But the community gets its lovely, distinctive look and old-time charm from a 28-mile system of parks and grand boulevards that was constructed in the 19th century and which surrounds the neighborhood. People inhabiting condos in buildings overlooking these boulevards will certainly prize their leafy views and the wide streets below.
A landmark in the neighborhood is a 70-foot tall Doric column that is known as the Illinois Centennial Memorial Column. It was erected in 1918 to mark the 100th anniversary of Illinois Statehood.
Mansions that qualify as archictural gems, such as one that was constucted to resemble an Irish castle, get their well-deserved due when an historic house walk is held every year in Logan Square. Tours emphasize the architecture, ornamentation, furnishings and lifestyles of wealthy Chicagoans of yesteryear.
Architecture tends to be eclectic. There are stately old mansions and new buildings designed with a more contemporary edge.
Another niche neighborhood is Palmer Square where a 10-acre park was developed in the 19th century as part of the boulevard system. It is being outfitted with a tot lot, walking trails, a soft surface jogging trail, seating, lighting and landscaping.
Dining options are plentiful in Logan Square where there are approximately 100 bistros, cafes, bars, bakeries and restaurants.
Logan Square is easily accessible to expressways and public transportation. The neighborhood is a place where condo dwellers can find homes that are modern or vintage and which will prove a wise investment. |
