Lincoln Park, a prosperous, progressive neighborhood on Chicago’s north side, has come a long way from its humble origins as a small army post in 1824. It has grown into a bustling neighborhood offering an array of condos and entertainment.
Perhaps you want to meet friends for a beer in a cozy pub, dine at an ethnic eatery, shop at a trendy boutique or plan a fun-filled family trip to the zoo. When it comes to things to do, Lincoln Park has it all, along with a wealth of condominiums in a range of sizes and prices.
Condos appeal to the young urban professionals who are just getting into the housing market and who flock to this neighborhood. They are drawn by condos with views in high rise structures as well as renovated units in vintage buildings that exude old-time charm. Elegant brown and graystone, low-rise structures line pretty, tree-shaded streets in this upscale neighborhood.
Whether they opt for new construction or an apartment building converted to condos, buyers also find the convenience of the neighborhood’s location appealing. Lincoln Park is just two and a half miles from city’s main business district in the Loop and is well-served by public transit.
Older structures with distinctive charm abound in Lincoln Park. Many of the neighborhood’s current structures were built between 1880 and 1904. During the 19th century, some of the city’s more famous residents, some of whom have streets named for them, built graceful mansions in the neighborhood.
Architectural styles to be found in Lincoln Park include Queen Anne, Italianate, Baroque, Georgian and Prairie School.
The 19th century was also the era during which some of the neighborhood’s well-known institutions got their starts. Children’s Memorial Hospital was founded in 1882. St Vincent’s College, which later became DePaul University, was started in 1898. Lincoln Park Zoo was established in 1874 with the purchase (at a cost of $10) of a single bear cub. Today, it has a variety of exhibits and houses 80 species of mammals and 75 species of birds along with reptiles and amphibians.
In addition to its identity as a high-end residential district, Lincoln Park is where some of the city’s best off-Loop theatres are located. They share space with jazz and blues nightclubs, a conservatory, beaches, boat harbors, lakefront bike and jogging trails, the Chicago Historical Society museum and the Peggy Notebaert Nature Museum.
The neighborhood takes its name from the 1200-acre Lincoln Park, a vast stretch of green space that extends along the waters of Lake Michigan on the east. The area’s other boundaries are Diversey Street to the north; North Avenue on the south and Clybourn Avenue on the west.
New condo structures include Clark Courtyard Condominiums which offers well-sized one and two bedroom condominiums in a courtyard building. Units here have upgraded finishes and a highly desirable location in the heart of Lincoln Park at 2545-2549 N. Clark Street.
Deming on the Park Condominiums, an 8-unit elevator building at 454-456 W. Deming Place, offers high end-finishes and a facade of brick and limestone. The interiors provide some of the elements condo residents have come to expect in Lincoln Park including 42-inch cabinetry, granite countertops, crown molding, hardwood floors and marble bathrooms.
Anyone seeking a condo will find that Lincoln Park is the place to be if you seek convenience and lots of things to do. Prices, naturally, are much higher than they were in 1836 when land was just $150 an acre. However, the neighborhood’s premium location, reputation for safety and easy access to Lake Michigan are assets ensuring that condos here will continue to appreciate. |
