The gleam of hardwood floors, glass doorknobs and other vintage details are readily found among condos in LaGrange, a community west of Chicago. Taller, newer condo buildings have such features as spacious floor plans and windows offering views of treetops.
A downtown district filled with an eclectic mix of restaurants, stores and shops is at the heart of this village that was incorporated in 1879. It was founded by Franklin Dwight Cossitt. He named it LaGrange in honor of a town in Tennessee where he once had owned a cotton farm.
Following Chicago’s Great Fire in 1871, LaGrange began to grow with new residents attracted by the village's proximity to Chicago. They also were drawn by the community's large lots.
Residents today still are attracted by the easy commute and greenery even through the village has a more urban profile in its downtown business district. The village has a has a commuter station that allows residents to get to and from Chicago in a matter of minutes. LaGrange is also close to the Stevenson and Eisenhower Expressways.
The community’s close-knit spirit is displayed throughout the year at events that provide fun and entertainment. There is an annual Pet Parade, farmer’s market, art fairs, festivals and historic housewalks are held in the village.
Eateries serve a wide range of cuisines including upscale Tapas, Chinese for dining in or taking out, and an upscale burger joint with a rooftop deck. The downtown also has a movie theater.
The community’s history is reflected in its architecture. It has single family homes in a range of architectural styles including Victorian-era painted ladies, Queen Annes, Bungalows, Georgians, Prairie-style, Arts and Crafts, and ranches.
Condos in LaGrange are in vintage buildings such as Tudors and brick courtyard structures, as well as is in buildings that date from the 1960s and ‘70s.
The high end of the market is new construction that features upscale units such as a three bedroom, two bathroom penthouse at Beacon Place. Priced at $489,000, it features a cook's kitchen, spacious living room with tile fireplace, and a balcony. It is within walking distance of the downtown and commuter train station.
Another in-town condo in a newer building is priced at $329,000. It features two bedrooms, one bath, a balcony and an attached garage.
People just entering the housing market will find a condo to suit their needs and pocketbooks in LaGrange. Condos start in the $150,000 range.
The community's proximity to Chicago, it's well-maintained, yet vibrant downtown create a setting where a condo purchased either as a place to live or as an investment is sure to appreciate. |
