Located approximately 40 miles southwest of Chicago, Joliet has a long, interesting history that is continuing to evolve particularly as a large number of new condos are being constructed here.
The city is one of the fastest-growing in the nation averaging 1,400 building permits for new construction a year in recent years.

Joliet’s other attractions include two riverboat casinos, The Argosy Empress and Harrah’s, two racetracks, the Chicagoland Speedway and the Route 66 Raceway, a minor league baseball team, the Joliet Jackhammers. It also was a backdrop in the movie "The Blues Brothers" and provides the site for a television series, "Prison Break" which is filmed here.
When the city of about 145,000 people was founded in the 1840s, it was named Juliet. The name was later changed to Joliet and the city was reincorporated in the 1850s.
The quarrying of limestone earned the city the nickname "City of Stone." Limestone structures add an air of elegance and grace to the city’s downtown district.
The Joliet Area Historical Museum recalls the city’s history and offers a journey through time. It provides programs for children as well as life-size replica depicting the building of the historic Illinois Michigan Canal, a virtual ride on a replica trolley and a turn-of-the-century street past store fronts showcasing fashions of yesteryear. The city also has an historic district on its east side.
There are many dining options to suit every taste and budget. The city has food establishments, family diners, upscale restaurants, Sports Bar & grills and more. Westfield Shoppingtown is a large mall in Joliet.
While there is plenty to do in Joliet, it is also conveniently located for traveling elsewhere for either work or leisure. It is off the Stevenson Expressway and has a commuter train that takes people to Chicago and points in between.
The city has grown dramatically in recent years as former cornfields have been annexed and developed residentially. A three-bedroom condo in a community with a clubhouse is priced at $234,000.
