If you can't find a condo in Edgewater then you aren't looking very hard.
Condos are everywhere in this neighborhood that has high rises, mid-rises and two and three flats that are a magnet for people who seek the ease of condominium living, a wide range of prices from which to choose, and a location that's convenient whether you work in Chicago's Loop or in any of Chicago's affluent northern suburbs.
The Loop is just seven miles away and bus lines and elevated train lines allow for easy community.
It's not hard to see why people are drawn here. The assets that once attracted well-heeled visitors to stay at tony hotels in Edgewater are still here. The area was founded in the 1890s as a summer enclave for Chicago's upper crust.
As it did in yesteryear, Lake Michigan still provides gorgeous views and sandy beaches on which to relax and catch some rays. Those views are seen today from condo windows.
High-rise condominium and apartment buildings line one of the neighborhood's main drags, Sheridan Road, which is also where some of those stately old hotels once stood.
The Edgewater Beach Hotel at 5349 N. Sheridan Rd., recognized for its pink exterior, was one of those grand hotels. It opened its doors in 1916 and was torn down in the 1968. A portion of it remains and is an apartment building.
Streets that extend to the west from Sheridan Road contain smaller buildings, those mid-rises and vintage two and three-flats with stone or brick facades and and other old-fashioned charms such as hardwood floors and tile. Someone seeking a more intimate feeling in their home might look for a condo on one of these quieter streets.
Edgewater's assets have have made it place where peoples of diverse cultures are making their homes. African immigrants, people from Eastern Europe, senior citizens and young people have created a melting pot in Edgewater.
The neighborhood, which tends to be less expensive than some of its lakefront neighbors to the south, is appealing for first-time homebuyers who want a condo to call home. Prices ranges from as low as $95,000 for a one bedroom condo in a high-rise to upward of $700,000 for a stunning penthouse in the historic Bryn Mawr district.
Translated from Welsh, Bryn Mawr means Big Hill. The Chicago City Council has named it an historic district. The area is welcoming an influx of renovation of older structures and development of new ones including condo buildings. Old-fashioned street lamps and signage in green with gold lettering trumpet the area's historic status.
Another enclave within Edgewater that is just as interesting and just as popular a place for condos dwellers. It is Andersonville. It was settled by Swedish immigrants and their influence is still evident in Swedish bakeries, delis, and restaurants. It also home to the Swedish American Museum and to Midsommarfest, an annual street festival that celebrates Swedish culture and heritage.
The neighborhood's retail district is prized as a place where locally owned, independent retail establishments are thriving. It boasts everything from a dance supply store to florists to unique apparel and gift stores. From sushi to kebabs to Spanish/Basque cuisine, restaurants are just as varied. The neighborhood is also a place where a Gay and Lesbians community is adding to the area's vitality.
Leafy tree-lined streets and renovated condos in brick mid-rises and other structures offer places to kick off your shoes and relax after an afternoon of shopping or dining at one of the many eateries in Andersonville.
Whether your condo is in brick three-flat in Andersonville or in a high-rise with lake views in Edgewater, the condo market here does not disappoint. With so many dynamic features, Edgewater is a place that was appreciated by residents in centuries past and continues to be valued today especially by people seeking a place to call home or an investment property. |
