Once home to Louis Armstrong, Nat "King" Cole and box Joe Lewis, Bronzeville is a center for African-American culture and a lakefront neighborhood that is blossoming with new investment and condos from which people may enjoy the area's storied history and new amenities.
In the early part of the 20th century, this south side neighborhood was a destination for African Americans leaving the South. It gained an identity as a Black Metropolis and even has been called a suburb of Mississppi.
It boasts spacious boulevards and lovely, historic buildings that are recognized for their stunning architecture. These assets are a draw for condo dwellers who want to reside in a neighborhood loaded with historic ambience and be in a convenient location.
The neighborhood is bounded by 26th Street on the north; by Lake Michigan on the east; by 51st Street in the south and by the Rock Island/Pacific tracks on the west. It is just minutes from the Loop, the lakefront and the University of Chicago.
Because of its well-situated location and vintage buildings, Bronzeville is seeing investment and the renovation of its vintage structures. Condo buyers will not be disappointed by the neighborhood's range of housing options. These include luxury condos, Victorian homes, elegant brownstones, townhouses and high rises condo buildings with lake views.
The neighborhood is poised for even greater resurgence as the expansion of McCormick Place, which is nearby, is completed. The convention center, which has 3 million visitors a year, is in the midst of construcing a new building that will add thousands of square feet of exhibition space and is scheduled for completion in 2007.
Meanwhile, new restaurants and businesses are coming to this neighborhod. The Negro League Cafe reflects pays tribute to the Negro Baseball League and has a menu of Carribbean and soul food.
Another hotspot is the Parkway Ballroom. During the 1940s and '50s, the ballroom hosted the likes of Nat "King" Cole and Duke Ellington. Today, it offers gospel, neo-soul and jazz. The Parkway also has plans to include a membership-only nightclub "Bronze" that will offer wines and champagnes from around the world.
Establishment of an arts district is often one of the signs of a neighborhood revival and Bronzeville is no different. It has welcomed an influx of galleries.
Bookstores and other shops and entertainment venues are cropping up around the Harold Washington Cultural Center at 4701 S. King Dr. One of those bookstores, Afrocentric, offers thousands of titles and a kid's area. A 200-seat comedy club, Jokes and Notes, keeps customers smiling.
The cultural center is a 1,000 seat state of the arts performing facility. It has served as a host to many internationally acclaimed artist and historical events and is a venue for fundraisers and community celebrations. With such a wide range of new homes and businesses, Bronzeville is an up and coming neighborhood where condo dwellers want to be. They can see their investments appreciate as the area continues to revitalize. |
